Size: 3.04m H x 3.90m - 9’11” H x 12’9”W
Age: last quarter of the 16th century.
Condition: excellent.
The tapestry is complete. Minimal restorations.
Inspired by Old Testament, the subject tells the story of the life of the patriarch Jacob, son of Isaacs and Rebeccah, He is depicted in the foreground dressed as a roman soldier. Within the field several episodes of his life are represented: in the upper left side we may find the birth of the twins Jacob and Esau and on the right of this scene Isaacs is saying good bye to his two sons who are kneeling in front of him.
On the left side of the field there is the wedding of Jacob with his cousin Rachel. On the right side we find the construction of a sumptuous palace.
On the wide border there are allegories of Virtues at the four corners (Faith, Justice, Strength and Charity), while episodes of Jacob’s life are depicted in cartouches.
The type of work and the colors used may attribute this piece to Enghien, possibly the atelier of Philippe van der Cammen (active from 1541 to 1580).
The first “Story of Jacob” known was woven in Brussels by Willem de Kempeneer ( active from1520 to 1550) after a cartoon of Bernard van Orley (1488 – 1541) and now property of the Musée de Cinquantenaire in Brussels.
