The region is located between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and takes its name from the mountains' chain that runs through the region from north west to south east.
Many people buy Caucasian rugs after having previously acquired some Persian ones, first modern and then antique. What is the meaning of this trend that I consider a simply cultural evolution? It is probably just a natural phenomenon that goes along with a deeper and deeper introduction to oriental rugs.
After having bought the first rug (either from a T.V. auction or from the dealer on one's street), only then, you naturally get excited by the antique pathina of the most traditional common rug that is the Persian one. And only later, you start to appreciate the bare simplicity and the spontaneity of the Caucasian rug.
At this point you start learning that if a Caucasian rug is crooked it is not a manufacturing defect but a distinctive peculiarity of tribal hand-made rugs. And only now, you recognize a design asymmetry not as a default but as a sign of fantasy of nomadic populations (the Armenians, the Talish, the Curdishes of Karabagh) that reached with rugs (togheter with miniatures) their greatest artistic performancess.
