NORTHERN GERMANY
Hamburg or Wismar
Cushion tapestry mounted within an anti-reflective glazed frame of m. 0,75 H x 0,70 W. (2’4” x 2’3”). The tapestry measures m. 0,52 H 0,49 W (1’7” x 1’6”).
Age: mid XVII century
The piece belongs to a well known genre of small tapestries, mainly of Biblical subject, made in the workshops founded by Flemish weavers who moved to Germany for religious matters at the end of XVI century. Most of these workshops were in Hamburg or in the close city of Wismar. Few in the region of Schleswig-Holstein.
The scene depicts the Biblical subject of Susanna at her bath in a formal garden flanked by two Elders (chapter 13, Book of Daniel) from whom she is eventually saved in the law court by Daniel.
The field is within a four-sided floral border, incorporating corner cartouches with various motives which could have appropriate symbolism.
For example the ships (early Christian association with the refuge in which the faithful found safety and salvation), and the lower corners with figures holding an anchor (symbol of hope in early Christianity), and a pillar (symbol of spiritual strength and steadfastness).
