In spite of the fact that they started imitating oriental rugs, European productions ended up by having their own originality and have acquired, over the time, unique peculiarities.
Just think, for examples, of the all over patterns on ochre background of Spanish Cuenca rugs of the XVI and XVII centuries, of the unicity of Portoguese Arrajoplas needlepoints, of the particular magnificence of Aubussons and Savonneries, real protagonists of the the most important decorations.
It is not by chance that the record price for a rug sold at auction was reached by a Savonnerie, sold for more than 5.000.000 Euro, Christie's New York, November 2nd 2000.
